How to get to Vrana Lake?

Lake Vransko is located exactly halfway between Šibenik and Zadar, and as we have already said, it is a distance of slightly more than 20 kilometers as the crow flies. More precisely, the borders of this nature park are between Pirovac and Pakoštane.

The lake's location itself is a unique natural phenomenon, as it is located right next to the Adriatic Sea, separated from it by a stretch of land that is less than a kilometer wide in some places. On one side, you can enjoy the view of the islets in front of Murter, while on the other, Lake Vrana awaits you.

The best way to get to this destination is to travel on the Adriatic highway, because that way you will be able to enjoy some truly wonderful sights of the Adriatic coast. Of course, it will be much easier if you don't have to drive yourself, so contact Taxi Šibenik to help you organize this fantastic trip and enjoy it to the fullest.

The islets in front of Murter will create a beautiful scene in front of you that will serve as an ideal introduction to what follows.

The importance of Lake Vrana

Vransko Jezero Nature Park is an exceptionally valuable ornithological site that extends over 57 square kilometers and is filled with brackish water. Its most important part is located at the northwestern end of the lake, which is covered with reeds, which makes this part of the lake a wetland.

This is why this part of the lake is extremely biologically diverse – the numerous plants and insects are an ideal habitat for birds, of which more than 250 different species have been recorded here, many of which are considered endangered. It is estimated that more than 100,000 birds visit Vrana Lake every winter.

With all of this, it won't come as a surprise that one of the most popular activities here is watching birds in the wild as they care for their young and build their nests. Truly, this kind of untouched nature experience is hard to find anywhere else.

But that's not the only reason why you should visit Lake Vrana. It is also very rich in fish, so if you are a fan of sport fishing, you will be happy to know that you can fish at this location almost all year round.

In addition, there is a 40 kilometer bicycle trail around the lake, which is another option for those who want an active vacation. Of course, the trail is also suitable for walks, and there are various viewpoints scattered along it, providing you with an ideal place to take a break, surrounded by beautiful greenery. The strong and intoxicating scent of sage will only enhance the experience, and the trail also passes through a dense pine forest, which you can also enjoy.

Archaeological finds and hinterland

There are numerous archaeological sites around Lake Vrana, and traces of civilization in this area date back to two thousand years BC. This area was very important even during the Roman Empire, when the so-called villas rustica were built, as well as the water supply system that supplied Zadar.

There are also a handful of remains of medieval towers and other buildings that served Croatian nobles until the Turkish invasion in the 16th century.

Once you've finished enjoying Lake Vrana, if you have time left, explore the small Dalmatian hinterland and round off a fantastic day with the third special geographical entity after the Adriatic Sea and the lake. Benkovac is only five kilometers away, and there you can discover many more archaeological sites, as well as excellent food (don't miss trying homemade peka!).
