Diocletian's Palace

Of course, Diocletian's Palace should be the centerpiece of any Split sightseeing tour. This imposing structure, built by no less than a Roman emperor, is still alive and well today, boasting impressive historical landmarks and many examples of different architecture styles.

The central square of the palace is the Peristil, and during the summer you can often see "Diocletian" and his empress Prisca there at noon greeting all visitors and welcoming them. Of course, you won't be able to miss the Cathedral of St. Domnius, or St. Domnius, as the people of Split call their heavenly patron, which is located on the Peristyle itself.

But the palace offers much more to see. Its narrow stone streets exude Mediterranean charm and are full of excellent restaurants where you can enjoy a meal in an unforgettable atmosphere. On the south side of the Peristyle is the entrance to the Diocletian's Cellars, where you can buy a variety of souvenirs, and you can also go deeper into the bowels of the palace itself, into rooms that were, among other things, used for filming the mega-popular Game of Thrones series.

Riva

The southern exit and basement of the palace will take you right to Split's Riva, the favorite promenade of the people of Split. Numerous cafes here offer you the opportunity to enjoy your favorite drink with the sound of seagulls, a view of the sea and islands in the distance. True, the prices are a bit more expensive than usual, but for drinking drinks in the hot summer months, this is by far the most popular place in the city, and a visit to Split is not complete until you have had a coffee here.

You will also find restaurants on and near the Riva, and on its western part, the Riva connects to Prokurative, another famous city square. This place is the stage for many concerts and other cultural events, and the famous Split Summer music festival is held here.

Marjan and the seersucker

From the Riva, there is a perfect view of Marjan Hill, a green oasis that is also one of the symbols of Split. If you want to climb it, good news - you can easily do so because from the Riva you can easily reach the stairs that lead to the famous "first viewpoint", a lookout point from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the old part of the city.

And if by any chance you can come here in the evening, don't miss it because the experience is simply magical. There is also a café/restaurant where you can get refreshments, and dinner here will surely enchant your better half.

But this is not the only viewpoint you can enjoy. There are several of them all over the hill, and there is also a terrace at the top of Marjan that offers an incredible view. In addition, if you decide to do a little hiking, you will discover a series of charming churches hidden among this greenery. A little effort can bring you an unforgettable day in Split.

Other attractions

Of course, there is much more to enjoy in Split. Pjaca is another beautiful city square that is really worth a visit, and the Split City Museum is located in a unique location in the beautiful Papalić Palace, and Poljud Stadium is also worth a visit, not only because it is the home of Hajduk, which is like a religion to all Split residents, but also because it is an extremely valuable architectural achievement that has been declared a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia.

And if you're into swimming, Bačvice is a cult Split beach, but there are also beautiful beaches around Marjan: Kašjuni on one side and Bena and Prva voda on the other.
